Apple Has Strong Fiscal Q2

Cupertino, Calif. — Apple reported a 43 percent gain in revenue growth for its fiscal second quarter that ended March 29.

Apple posted revenue of $7.51 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.05 billion. These results compare with revenue of $5.26 billion and net quarterly profit of $770 million in the year-ago quarter.

It shipped 2.289 million Macintosh computers during the quarter, representing 51 percent unit growth and 54 percent revenue growth over the year-ago quarter.

The company sold 10.64 million iPods during the quarter, representing 1 percent unit growth and 8 percent revenue growth over the year-ago quarter. Quarterly iPhone sales were 1.7 million.

Amazon Post Double-Digit Gains

Seattle — Amazon.com reported double-digit gains in net sales, operating income and net income for its first quarter, ended March 31.

Net sales increased 37 percent to $4.13 billion in the first quarter, compared with $3.02 billion in first quarter 2007. Excluding the favorable impact from year-over-year changes in foreign exchange rates throughout the quarter, net sales grew 31 percent, compared with first quarter 2007.

Operating income increased 36 percent to $198 million in the first quarter, compared with $145 million in first quarter 2007. Net income increased 30 percent to $143 million in the first quarter with net income of $111 million vs. the previous year's first quarter.

Worldwide electronics and other general merchandise sales grew 56 percent to $1.48 billion in the first quarter compared with the previous year's $950 million.

North America segment sales, representing the company's U.S. and Canadian sites, were $2.13 billion, up 31 percent from first quarter 2007.

Ingram Micro's Q1 Sales Up 4%

Santa Ana, Calif. — Ingram Micro worldwide sales for the quarter were $8.58 billion, up four percent from the prior-year period.

Net income for the first quarter ended March 29 was $64.1 million, compared with $37 million in the year-ago period.

Regionally, Ingram Micro saw sales in North America of $3.29 billion for the quarter, or 38 percent of total revenues, which it said was essentially flat with the $3.28 billion it posted a year ago.

The company's total worldwide operating expenses were $386.2 million compared to $335.1 million in the prior-year quarter.

Worldwide operating income was $99.3 million. In North America, operating income was $40.6 million, compared with $57 million in the year-ago quarter.
