Sharp’s X Series Adds Amimon System

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 4/30/2008 2:16:00 PM

Santa Clara, Calif. — Amimon, developer of semiconductor technologies enabling wireless high-definition video in-home networking applications, has reached a deal with Sharp to offer a wireless HDTV link for the Sharp X-Series ultra-thin LCD TVs, the companies said today.

Amimon’s said its WHDI technology will simplify the installation of Sharp’s ultra-thin LCD TVs by eliminating the need for capable hookups between the LCD TV set and a separate tuner unit.

The system is capable of delivering uncompressed HD video streams wirelessly.

Amimon’s WHDI technology uses a video-modem approach to deliver wireless uncompressed HDTV. The system operates at a range of more than 100 feet, through multiple walls and with latency of less than 1 millisecond, Amimon said.

WHDI technology offers universal wireless whole-home HD connectivity with quality equivalent to that achieved with HDMI.

Sharp’s X-series models, which come in 37-, 42- and 46-inch screen sizes, measure 3.44 cm thick (at their thinnest part). The first models recently went on sale in Japan.

The series uses a discrete component configuration that separates the display section from the tuner section. The two sections can be connected with a cable or by using an optional wireless video transmitter unit equipped with the Amimon WHDI technology.
