Cobra Expands Speed And Red-Light Detection

BY AMY GILROY -- TWICE, 10/22/2007

CHICAGO — Cobra is debuting two new radar detectors at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show, including its first portable detector to offer speed- and red-light-camera alerts.

The new model XRS 9950 is a 12-band detector that works with an optional camera locator. The locator uses GPS to “know” when the driver is nearing its database of speed- and red-light-camera sites. The feature was offered for the first time earlier this year on the Cobra interior-installed XRS R9G at a street price of $429 and it is now migrating into the portable line at a price to be announced.

Other features on the XRS 9950 include S-XRS, a new higher performance detector that claims a 9-mile line of sight detection range for X and Ka bands, according to Cobra. It also has POP mode detection; voice alerts; car-battery-voltage display; and a 1.5-inch, high-resolution, full-color display with 3D graphics. Shipping is expected in March 2008.

The step-down XRS 9940 also offers S-XRS detection and has a 1-inch OLED color display, as well as POP detection and car-battery-voltage display. It is also expected to ship in March at a price to be announced.
