Becker Enters U.S. Aftermarket With Its First PND

By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 8/20/2007

FARMINGTON HILLS, MICH. — Harman/Becker Automotive Systems entered the U.S. automotive aftermarket with the launch of its first personal navigation device (PND), and the Harman International subsidiary plans to launch more models later this year.

The Traffic Assist Highspeed 7934 is available exclusively at Office Depot retail stores nationwide at a suggested $399, but the chain is currently selling the device for $299 on its Web site.

The PND features 3.5-inch touchscreen with day/night display option, MP3/WMA music playback, photo viewer, and pedestrian and bicycle modes. It plays music through its two embedded speakers while navigating drivers to their destination. It also displays the legal speed limit at the vehicle's location and can be programmed to deliver an audible alert when the speed is exceeded.

The device features 400MHz processor for quick route calculation and SIRF III GPS receiver for improved accuracy. It ships with Navteq maps of the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Canada.

Other features include SD card slot to play backup to 2GB of music and photos.

Harman/Becker is a supplier of OEM and aftermarket entertainment systems for vehicles, including car hi-fi, infotainment, vehicle navigation, telematics and integrated multimedia systems.
