NARDA, AHAM Offer Certification

By Staff -- TWICE, 8/6/2007

GLENVIEW, ILL. — A refrigerant recovery certification program study guide, sponsored by the North American Retail Dealers Association (NARDA) and the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), is now available online.

According to the trade groups, the program, approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), offers a "convenient, affordable, and thorough self-study course" designed especially for technicians who recover refrigerant from appliances grouped as Type I by the EPA.

The EPA requires technicians recovering refrigerant during appliance sealed system service be certified by an EPA approved organization.

The program is self-administered and costs $60 per application. Candidates receive an exam, a downloadable training manual, computerized scoring of test results, plus a wallet-sized certification card and a wall certificate for those who pass.

The comprehensive, 60-page training manual was prepared by home appliance industry experts and focuses on issues relevant to Type I products for study and open-book reference while taking the test. Candidates receive an enrollment packet including one version of the test, an answer card, official processing forms and a password to access the manual. The completed, signed exams are returned to NARDA for grading.

The NARDA/AHAM refrigerant recovery certification program offers seven different exam versions, each based on the EPA's official question bank. Each exam version contains 50 questions: 25 on general ozone depletion and refrigeration topics (including EPA regulatory requirements) and 25 about Type I appliances.

To order a NARDA/AHAM certification packet, candidates should call (847) 375-4713 or send a check or money order to: NARDA CFC Test, 4700 W Lake Ave, Glenview, IL, 60025. Information is also available at www.narda.com.
