TV-Surround Update

Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 2/26/2001

During the 2000-01 TV season, more than 240 current and syndicated TV series, specials and regular events are being broadcast over terrestrial analog TV stations in Dolby Surround, according to Dolby Labs. That's up from 180 during the previous season.

In addition, any of the more than 12,000 theatrical films recorded in surround sound can be broadcast in surround or encoded in surround on videotape or DVD.

As of January 2000, 715 of the nation's 1,909 terrestrial TV stations broadcast in stereo and are therefore capable of passing through Dolby Surround audio to homes, according to the 2000 Broadcasting & Cable yearbook.
