Brother Expands Laser Line

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 6/18/2007

NEW YORK — Brother last week introduced its first color laser multifunction printers based on its new, in-house-designed laser engine.

The two-unit MFC-9000 Series are the next generation of products stemming from Brother's HL-4400 single-function printers that started shipping in April.

"Brother can now chart its own course," said Jeff Sandler, Brother's marketing director, laser multifunction printing, adding that the company considers this one of the company's most important breakthroughs. The primary benefit of using Brother-created technology is the company is no longer at the beck and call of an OEM when it comes to product development.

The MFC-9440CN, shipping this month with a $599 suggested retail, features 21 page per minute print speeds for color and monochrome at up to 2,400 by 600 dpi, 17 ppm for copies and 1,200 by 2,400 color scanning, Sandler said. There is also a 33.6K modem for faxing.

The MFC-9840CDW, $849 and shipping in September, adds built-in Wi-Fi and duplex printing, scanning and faxing.
