Fabrik Ships Ferrari-Inspired Hard Drives

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 4/23/2007

SAN MATEO, CALIF. — Storage maker Fabrik has introduced a combination desktop/online storage system that will allow consumers to access select segments of data through the Web.

The drives sell under the SimpleTech brand, which was purchased by Fabrik in February, and each comes with a 2GB online storage account located at www.myfabrik.com, said Michael Williams, Fabrik's COO. Additional online storage can be purchased at $0.49 per GB.

The six drives were designed by the Italian firm Pininfarina, the company that designs Ferraris. Each capacity size is available in a specific color scheme:

160GB - Ferrari Red
250GB - Pearl White
320GB - Sapphire
500GB - Onyx
750GB - Charcoal Gray
1TB - Charcoal Gray

The four lower-capacity models began shipping this month with the 750GB and 1TB expected out in May. The latter two will include a combination USB 2.0 and FireWire 400 interface.

Pricing ranges from $99 to $199 for those now on the market. Pricing has not been set for the May products, but the 1TB should fall into the $400 to $500 area, a company spokesperson said.
