Competition For Value DSCs Heats Up

By Greg Scoblete -- TWICE, 3/12/2007

LAS VEGAS — Falling prices in the camera market have also opened up room for kids to get into the digital photography act.

Sakar announced a license deal (the first for the firm) for Crayola-branded digital cameras. The first product will be the $49.99 EZ Grip Kids digital camera, geared for children ages two to seven. It will ship in the spring with bundled software for creative applications. The company plans to introduce Major League Baseball and Spiderman 3-themed digital cameras in the spring as well.

For adults, the company will offer a 3-megapixel camera with a 1.5-inch LCD, a fixed focal length and Web cam functionality for $49.99. A 5-megapixel model, for $79.95, sports a 2-inch LCD, in-camera cropping and PictBridge compatibility. Finally, the top-of-the-line 7-megapixel unit, for a suggested $99, sports a 2.4-inch LCD, a 3x optical zoom lens and in-camera cropping.

Digital Blue, a Disney and American Idol licensee, is also courting the youth market with a line Disney Pix Max cameras. The models will come in a variety of Disney characters and higher-end offerings will include a 3-megapixel sensor, 1.5-inch color LCD and 32MB of internal memory.
