TRG: Installed OEM Nav To Hit 1.8M Units

By Staff -- TWICE, 2/26/2007

MINNETONKA, MINN. — Sales of installed navigation systems reached 1.5 million units in new U.S. vehicles last year, expected to climb slightly to 1.8 million in 2007, said research firm TRG.

This compares with sales of 2.4 million portable navigation units in the United States, it said.

OEM navigation systems are offered on 69 percent of all 2007 vehicles, up from 60 percent for the 2006 model year, it said.

Actual take rates (sales) for installed navigation systems are about 40 percent on luxury sedans and SUVs, but less than 10 percent for most other vehicles. Entry-level vehicles have take rates of less than 1 percent, which helps justify the growth of PNDs.

Looking further ahead, sales of navigation system in new cars could reach 2.6 million in 2009, 3.1 million in 2010 and 3.75 million in 2011, said TRG.
