LaCie Adds Blu-ray Drive

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 1/29/2007

PORTLAND, ORE. — LaCie introduced several new consumer products earlier this month, including a Blu-ray drive that will ship in a few weeks.

The LaCie d2 Blu-ray Drive is an external drive that will work with both Macs and PCs. The drive can read, write and rewrite 25GB or 50GB BD-R and BD-RE media and is backward compatible with all other DVD and CD formats. The company said it will ship in mid-January with a $1,149 suggested retail. LaCie has started taking preorders on its Web site.

The company will also start shipping the LaCie d2 Safe hard drive. This is a 500GB drive with USB 2.0 and FireWire 400/800 interfaces and a biometric fingerprinting scanner for added security. It will carry a $299 suggested retail.

The last consumer product is the LaCie FireWire multimedia speakers. This two-channel, 8-watt system is powered via the FireWire connection and will cost $79 when it ships this month.
