XM, Garmin Pursue Motorcycle Market

By Staff -- TWICE, 8/7/2006

WASHINGTON — XM Satellite Radio and Garmin introduced two separate motorcycle products.

XM announced the release of a new XM radio to be sold by The Harley Davidson company to its dealers. The waterproof Road Tech AL20 XM radio has an easy to read display and is designed for 1996 and later model Harley motorcycles at a $249 suggested retail. (It can be transferred to a car with a car kit).

Garmin is introducing its first motorcycle GPS, designed from the ground up for the rugged motorcycle environment. Called the zumo, it has oversized touch-screen buttons for easier use and Bluetooth for communicating with a headset or special helmet. It is expected to be available in October at $999.

Almost 9 million motorcycles are registered in the United States, said Garmin.
