Logitech Remote Delivers Advanced Home Entertainment Control

By Staff -- TWICE, 12/19/2005

Fremont, Calif. — Logitech is planning to ship its Harmony 890 advanced universal remote control in December.

The unit, the company's first retail model of Harmony remotes to use both radio frequency (RF) and infrared (IR) wireless signals to deliver control of most advanced home theater setups, need no line of sight, said Logitech, even with the remote controlling equipment hidden behind closed doors. It has a wireless range of up to 100 feet and sends RF commands to the wireless receiver, which then relays IR signals to the components.

The 890 also is designed so that a user can navigate through photos, videos and music on a PC by using the optional USB wireless PC transceiver, which plugs directly into a computer. The Harmony 890 supports the Z-Wave wireless technology standard.

The remote makes use of one-touch activity buttons that include any combination of entertainment components and even light settings. The unit includes a color display that serves as a personalized activity control center. It is fully back-lighted and uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

Suggested retail is $399.99, including the Harmony 890 wireless A/V receiver. Additional receivers will be available at a suggested $149.99 per unit.
