Coby Inks 4C DVD Group License

By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 11/21/2005

MASPETH, N.Y. — Coby Electronics has nailed down a U.S. licensing agreement with the 4C Group of DVD patent holders to “put us in a position for all our products to be fully licensed,” said executive VP Richard Goldberg.

Coby already has a license agreement with the 6C Group of patent holders, he said.

Previously, Coby sourced players from 3C-licensed factories and depended on them to maintain licensing agreements, Goldberg explained.

The latest agreement, reached with 3C licensing arm Philips, establishes Coby “as a reliable major source of DVD products in the United States,” the company said. “Now consumers can purchase Coby DVD players with confidence because Coby's DVD products employ licensed DVD technology.”

Coby, which also owns its own factory, plans in the “not-too-distant future” to manufacture 95 percent of its own products in-house, Goldberg added.
