Philips Remote Controls Networked A/V Devices

By Staff -- TWICE, 8/22/2005

Atlanta — Called a “unique” touch screen remote by Philips Electronics, the company's RC9800i is said to provide “easy-to-use” control of legacy and networked audio and video devices. In addition, the unit can access and control PC multimedia and Internet content to Wi-Fi-enabled A/V devices.

Designed with what Philips calls “seamless interoperability and hassle-free technology,” the 9800i is called the company's proof point of its Connected Planet vision, allowing consumers access to entertainment, information and services wherever and whenever in the home.

The remote, said to connect users to all A/V devices and Internet/PC content anywhere in the home and from any part of the house, allows consumers to experience music, movies and photos from the PC on and across all consumer electronic devices throughout the home. Users can access TV listings information directly from the Web at the touch of a button via the electronic program guide.

The remote connects seamlessly to the entertainment equipment with a few button presses, recognizes the brand of equipment through a smart mechanism by teaching the remote up to three button presses of the original remote, and blends the most frequently used functions into activities for ease of operation. Users can press a few buttons to upload the latest software, download new applications or subscribe to services wirelessly, anywhere in the home.

The unit is a small device with aluminum front panel and silver finish. It has a colorful, highly sensitive touch screen and a built-in USB connector. It is integrated with 802.11b Wi-Fi and universal plug and play for wireless networking. Availability had been set for early summer at a suggested $599 retail.
