BenQ Adds LightScribe DVD Burner

Staff -- TWICE, 3/21/2005

Irvine, Calif — PC peripherals maker BenQ will introduce in March its first DVD burner to incorporate Hewlett-Packard's LightScribe labeling technology.

The first BenQ LightScribe product is the DW1625 dual-format, double-layer DVD burner. It has write speeds of 2.4x for DVD+R dual layer, 16x single-layer DVD+R and 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R and 4x DVD-RW, and 16x DVD read. The drive will carry a $119 suggested retail price when it ships in March.

LightScribe uses the recorder's laser to burn an image or words onto the label side of the specially made discs, eliminating the need to make a label using an inkjet printer. These discs are coated with a substance that reacts to the laser. Hewlett-Packard introduced LightScribe into a select number of burners and PCs in 2004, but has since decided to include the technology in most of its CD and DVD burners.
