Harmony Remote Simplifies HDTVs, PVRs

Staff -- TWICE, 1/17/2005

LAS VEGAS — A new universal remote control, optimized for consumers buying complicated new HDTVs and personal video recorders, has been introduced by Logitech. Called the Harmony 880, the remote offers a large color display and enhanced navigation that simplifies the use of new home entertainment systems.

The more stylish and intuitive Harmony 880 features a vibrant, high-resolution color LCD screen that is twice as large as predecessor models, and offers finely sculpted buttons that make selecting an activity easy, said Fremont, Calif.-based Logitech. The rechargeable remote has the ability to control any component with an infrared receiver, while selecting an activity — such as watching a DVD or television — requires pressing just one button.

With rechargeables, the remote never needs new batteries, according to the company. It comes with a recharging station that also provides a home for the remote. All Harmony remotes are Internet powered and use a USB connection to interface with a PC.

Suggested retail for the Harmony 880 is $249.95, and the product will be available in April.

Also new from Fremont, Calif.-based Logitech as part of its cordless desktop lineup is what the company calls the world's first laser mouse. Called MX1000, the mouse features a laser beam nearly invisible to the human eye.

The mouse combines with the MX 3100 keyboard to offer advanced navigation and stylish design and features a shared wireless receiver that also serves as the mouse recharger. The desktop is designed for two-handed navigation with useful controls on the keyboard and mouse. Suggested retail for the MX 3100 is $149.95 and availability is April.
