DEI, Eclipse Bow Premier Lines For Subwoofers

Staff -- TWICE, 11/6/2000

TORRANCE, CALIF. -Eclipse, here, and Directed Electronics, Vista, Calif., have each launched new premier lines of subwoofers.

Eclipse's new subwoofer line features a titanium cone, which is resistant to the cone flex that causes distortion and coloration. Called the 88000DVC Titanium series, it is designed for efficiency and high SPL.

The Titanium line features 2-inch polyether surrounds and claims up to 3.5-inch peak-to-peak motion. The speakers have a continuous power handling of 750 watts and also feature extra-thick voice coil formers.

The Eclipse line ranges from the 10-inch model 88100Ti DVC at $699.99 to the 15-inch model 88150Ti DVC at $999.

DEI's new line is called CompX, and it features 20-ounce magnets, small box requirements and a three-way adjustable output.

The CompX subwoofers can be adjusted for optimum SPL, sound quality or all-around performance, the company said. Because the voice coil can travel a long distance (from 1 to 2 inches) the speakers can react differently, depending on the amplifier power it is matched with.

On the 10-inch DEI speaker, if the power from the amplifier is between 100 and 300 watts, the woofer will perform optimally for accurate bass. If a 300- to 500-watt amplifier is used, then it delivers more SPL and air compression but less accuracy. If the amplifier is between 500 and 800 watts, the speaker will simply deliver maximum SPL.

CompX woofers have a chromed, one-piece extended vented pole piece and back plate assembly, for accuracy and cooling. The 12- and 15-inch models use eight-layer voice coils for better power handling. Prices for the line start at $250.
