Maxtor Upgrades Software For OneTouch II

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 9/27/2004

New York— Maxtor is set to launch the latest model in its OneTouch family of external storage drives this week.

The OneTouch II features an improved software package that gives the user greater flexibility in hard-drive backup and management. Maxtor also retouched the chassis with a new silver color scheme, and it moved the OneTouch button from the center to the bottom of the front panel.

Paul Streit, Maxtor's senior manager, solutions marketing, said the most notable software changes have the new device automatically handling the initial set up

“The OneTouch II is ready on installation. No decisions have to be made as all local disks are backed up automatically,” he said.

Two versions of the OneTouch II began shipping this week. A 250GB model with a $329 suggested retail price and a 300GB model for $379.

Other software additions include saving versions of files historically, so the user can access an earlier copy and the hard drive itself can be segmented into two partitions: one for backing up the PCs hard drive and the second to act as a general storage area, Streit said. The OneTouch II also has a security level if the consumer wishes to place a password barrier to his or her saved files.

All the software is controlled through a new user interface.
