Sirius Passes 600,000 Subs

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 9/20/2004

NEW YORK — Sirius Satellite Radio announced it passed the 600,000-subscriber mark over the Labor Day weekend, claiming it remains on track to hit one million subscribers by the end of the year.

CEO Joe Clayton said, “Sirius acquired 64,000 subscribers in August — the best month in our company's history.” He added, “Beginning in September, we expect even greater subscriber growth, thanks in part to our new retailing partnerships with RadioShack, DISH Network, Wal-Mart, Advance Auto Parts and other dealers to be announced.”

Sirius noted that the Labor Day weekend also marked the debut of its coverage of college football from 23 universities. Later this week, Sirius will debut its coverage of NFL games.

Sirius announced it reached the 500,000-subscriber mark in July. Competitor XM Satellite Radio remains the market leader with over 2.1 million subscribers, expected to reach 3.1 million by the end of the year.
