Cordless Unveiled For Hearing, Visually Impaired

By Greg Scoblete -- TWICE, 5/3/2004

FORT WORTH, TEXAS— Phone maker Uniden plans April shipments of the EZI 996 900MHz analog cordless phone, which is designed to aid the hearing and visually impaired.

The EZI 996 features an "audio boost" control on the base station to amplify higher frequency sounds to improve voice clarity. The earpiece is "extra loud" so people with hearing impairments can better discern conversations.

The phone sports a large visual ringer, and a message LED on both the base station and handset flashes when a new voice mail or incoming call is received.

The keypad offers large, backlit buttons and a one-touch emergency dial key to call 911 or a customized emergency contact number of the consumer's choice. A detachable neck/shoulder rest is provided for additional comfort.

The EXI 996 also features caller ID/call waiting with a 30-name/number caller ID memory, a handset pager, an included belt clip, and ringer and ear set volume control.

The phone will ship to all Uniden dealers this month at a suggested retail of $49.99.

May is considered "Better Hearing and Speech Month" by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
