Portable PlayStation Set For '05

Staff -- TWICE, 3/8/2004

SAN DIEGO — Sony Corp. said the North American launch of its first handheld video game player, dubbed the PlayStation Portable, will come in early 2005. Although no firm launch dates were announced, most in the industry had expected the device before the 2004 holiday season.

The company said the device is now slated for release in North America near the end of its 2005 fiscal year in March 2005. Sony said the release date would provide time for software development.

Such major game developers as Activision, Electronics Arts and THQ have announced plans to develop games.

A version of the game player will be introduced in Japan before the end of calendar year 2004, Sony said.

In other news, Sony's forthcoming PSX multimedia gaming system will be sold through the Sony Electronics Company and not Sony Computer Entertainment, which has traditionally handled PlayStation sales.
