Motorola Upgrades Its Digital Video Line

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 1/19/2004

LAS VEGAS— Motorola upgraded its broadband digital video device line at the show this week with the launch of four new devices, including the DCP601 the company's first DVD-player-equipped model.

The DCP601 combines a 6.1-channel A/V system with HD decoding and digital cable capability along with a progressive scan DVD player, said John Burke, Motorola's corporate VP and general manager for broadband. Pricing has not been set, but it will ship late in the second quarter.

The DCP601 is joined by the DCP600, which is the same product without the DVD player. It ships at the same time as its sister product.

Motorola also introduced the HDT500R and HDT300 HD digital cable-ready receivers. The HDT500R can capture both cable and off-air HD signals and meets the plug-and-play standard with the use of a CableCARD. In addition, the device is a DVR with a 160GB hard drive. It will ship late in the third quarter.

The HDT300 has the same functionality, but lacks the DVR feature and hard drive. It will ship in the second quarter.

Motorola also showed a series of home-control products that it will start selling through retail. A starter kit featuring several remote cameras and water and fire sensors will become available in the second quarter with a $299 suggested retail.

The kit allows a person to track information from a PC or over the Internet if they sign up with a special service the information can be checked, Burke said. o
