Research Surveys Show PC Sales Jumped In Q3

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 10/27/2003

NEW YORK— PC shipments enjoyed double-digit growth in the third quarter with notebook computer sales leading the resurgence and this figure should be sustainable into the fourth quarter, according to one notebook vendor.

According to preliminary data from Gartner, Stamford, Conn. and IDC, Framingham, Mass., U.S. PC shipments for the quarter were up 19 percent and 16.1 percent, respectively. Each company cited a huge increase in notebook sales as the primary reason. Gartner reported that 15.6 million computers were shipped during the third quarter, while IDC put the number at 14.2 million. This discrepancy is due to the firm's tracking the category slightly differently.
