New TDK CD Case Does Double Duty As Portable Speaker

Garden City, N.Y.— TDK Electronics has introduced a compact, multi-function product, called I'MASPEAKER, that looks like a standard CD carrying case, but has flat-panel speakers hidden in the case lining. These provide rich, clear sound when users plug a portable audio player or laptop into the unit.
I'MASPEAKER, also called the Integrated Music Accessory Speaker, is called by TDK a convenient on-the-go alternative to headphones, boomboxes or standalone satellite speakers. The company said it is the world's first CD case with integrated speaker.
The product is available in two models — dual-speaker and single-speaker versions — in a variety of different textures and colors, including blue, black and red.
The dual-speaker model holds 24 CDs and offers seven hours of playing time with three AA batteries. The single-speaker model holds 12 CDs and provides eight hours of playing time with two AA batteries.
The dual-speaker measures 7 inches by 15 inches by 2 inches, while the single-speaker measures 7 inches by 7 inches by 2 inches.
TDK said the speaker-in-a-CD-case concept utilizes SurfaceSound flat-panel speaker technology developed by audio-solutions company NXT.
Suggested retails are $29.99 for the dual and $19.99 for the single.
