Midland Pushes New Channel 1 For Emergencies

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 1/27/2003

LAS VEGAS— Midland launched at CES this month a national promotional campaign to designate Channel 1 on CB, FRS and GMRS radios as the new "meet and greet" and emergency channel.

Just as Channel 19 serves the trucker market, so Channel 1 would help average users. Any Channel 1 user can ask another user for information, such as directions or restaurant recommendations, or they can tune in just to talk. Although Midland is sponsoring the promotion, it is inviting other manufacturers to participate, and the promotion encompasses all makes and models of CBs, FRS and GMRS radios. "We consider this a public service campaign," said a Midland spokesman.

The promotion, called Midland 1, will include bumper stickers and in-store displays. Midland will reward its dealers each time they respond to a call on Channel 1 and assist someone, said the spokesman. Midland is also recruiting law enforcement and travelers' aid organizations to participate in the promotion.
