Planar Drops 19-inch LCD Below $1,000

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 12/23/2002

BEAVERTON, ORE. — Flat-panel maker Planar Systems last week reduced prices on its 19-inch LCD monitor line to less than $1,000.

Planar's UXGA CT1905S, designed for the high-end gamer and graphic artist, is now priced at $999, after $50 rebate. Two other models in the CT line, the CT1904N and CT1904Z, fall under the $1,000 barrier. The former is at $975 and the latter $775.

The entry-level model is the PL191M that has a $749 suggested retail price, after $50 rebate.

"We think consumers have decided that 19-inch is the optimal size for LCD monitors and we're going after that market segment," said Erick Petersen, Planar's desktop division general manager.

Planar's monitors are sold through several online outlets and catalogs, but the company's road map has it selling in retail. A company spokesman could not narrow down when this might take place.
