Sony Introduces Cineza Projectors

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 10/14/2002

MINNEAPOLIS— Sony used the CEDIA Expo to unveil a pair of new LCD projectors for its new ultra-compact Cineza video projector series.

The second-generation models are highlighted by the VPL-HS10, which uses Sony's proprietary LCD technology, including a wide XGA LCD panel with 1366 by 768 pixel resolution, high-contrast ratio, enhanced brightness and improved detail. It includes CineMotion reverse 3:2 pull-down, a DVI-HDTV input with HDCP copy protection, a Memory Stick slot for viewing JPEG photos onscreen and SideShot2 digital keystone correction.

The unit is slated to ship this fall at a $3,000 suggested retail price.

The second Cineza model is the VP-HS2, which was developed for "informal home entertainment — watching movies, playing video games or showing vacation images," the company said. It features a wide VGA LCD panel with 854 by 480 resolution, 1,000 ANSI lumens of brightness, a 600:1 contrast ratio and SideShot feature.

The projector ships in the fall at a $1,800 suggested retail price and will replace the first Cineza (VPL-HS1).

Also announced was Sony's Digital Network Recorder featuring an 80GB hard drive, good for up to 80 hours of program recording. The unit uses TiVo's subscription-based program listings service. It is designed to work with over-the-air NTSC broadcasts in addition to satellite TV and cable TV systems across the country. Model SRV-3000 is slated to ship this month at a $500 suggested retail price.

New in DVD is the DVP-CX875P 301-disc mega-changer with Sony's disc management system featuring an intuitive onscreen user interface that allows consumers to group categories of discs by genre and sorts them alphabetically. It is shipping now at a $500 suggested retail price.
