WASHINGTON— XM Satellite Radio announced it has signed up more than 201,500 subscribers, achieving its market projections, despite a sluggish third quarter in consumer electronics overall.
In addition Sirius Satellite Radio said Ford will begin offering Sirius radios during calendar 2003 in select Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Jaguar, Volvo and Land Rover vehicles. Most likely the initial radios will be offered as a dealer option with factory installed radios to follow, Sirius said. Mazda and Aston Martin are expected to announce plans at a later date.
XM confirmed that General Motors is now rolling out XM as factory installed equipment in 25 models and that GM expects to enable 350,000 to 400,000 XM subscribers for the 2003
model year. Honda is also offering XM in the Accord, Pilot and Acura MDX, and Nissan is offering it as well as Sirius Satellite Radio in several models.
XM also said it is broadcasting the Major League Baseball playoffs, league championships and the World Series on its ESPN Radio channel. Sirius is also sponsoring the Foo Fighters "Brandtidos" tour beginning this month. The band's fourth album, "One By One," will debut exclusively on Sirius one week before the general release.
