Nirotek Demos 2-Speaker Surround

Minneapolis— Nirotek America of Lawndale, Calif., demonstrated the first system that delivers 6.1-channel surround sound from two satellite speakers and a powered subwoofer. The Niro-branded TWO6.1 system, based on a six-channel AM/FM receiver, ships in October at a unilateral retail price of $1,999.
It's designed to reduce speaker clutter in a home theater system.
The system features Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES 6.1-channel decoding and Dolby Pro Logic II. Post-surround digital processing and system equalization combine with proprietary driver placement in a single satellite speaker in front and one in the rear to create what the company called a "broad and detailed" home theater experience and high-fidelity multichannel DVD-Audio and SACD music.
Each front and rear cabinet features three separate left, center and right tweeter/midwoofer pairs, each pair powered independently. Two speakers fire off to the side at an angle while the middle speaker fires forward. The front cabinet, which can be placed on the top of the TV, features IR sensor for use with the supplied universal A/V remote.
The rear cabinet uses the same topology and is placed behind the listeners, high up on the wall and firing down. Alternately, the rear cabinet can be placed on the floor, firing up.
Nirotek said it no longer plans to license the technology, which can be implemented in enclosed speakers, in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, in cars and in large-screen TVs. The company has opted instead to continue developing the Niro brand. The company also provides Niro-branded audiophile equipment.
