Sony Unveils New Dye Sub Printer Pair

By Staff -- TWICE, 9/16/2002

San Diego— Sony added two new dye sublimation printers to its digital imaging portfolio: the DPP-EX5 and DPP-EX7 digital photo printers.

The DPP-EX5 is shipping now for a suggested retail of $200. The EX7 will ship in October for a suggested $450.

Both printers come with built-in editing and creative tools, allowing users to adjust image sharpness, contrast, brightness and size. These tools also enable users to select and merge images as well as incorporate personalized messages into their prints.

Each print from both models is laminated with Super Coat 2 laminate to seal and protect photos from fading, spills, moisture and fingerprints. The two new photo printers also support the Exif print standard, which improves the printing process through color consistency and final output quality. The EX5 and 7 come bundled with a self-cleaning cartridge.

Both can create 25 sheets of postcard size photos or 30 sheets of 3.5x5-inch prints with one ribbon with the following print speeds: 90 seconds for a 4x6, 75 seconds for a 3.5x5 and 60 seconds for a 3.5x4-inch print.

In addition to being PC and Mac compatible via a USB connection and Sony supplied software drivers, the DPP-EX5 can connect to a television for larger viewing and editing of photos away from the computer. Each printer has one dedicated slot for Memory Stick media, and the DPP-EX7 has an additional slot for Type II PC cards for other types of flash media used with a PC card adaptor, including SmartMedia and CompactFlash, among others.

The DPP-EX7 also has a 3.8-inch color touch-screen LCD for viewing, editing and customizing pictures prior to printing.
