Canon Business Class Product Hits Retail

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y. — Canon began to fulfill a promise to sell more SO/HO product through retail with the introduction the imageCLASS D660 digital copier/printer. The D660 combines a copier and 600x600 laser printer in a desktop package expected to carry a suggested retail price of $699 when it ships this month. The D660 is the first of a line of similar business class products that will sell through retail, the company reported. Other features include USB interface, 12MB of memory, a 500-sheet paper cassette and Canon's standard three-year limited warranty.

Belkin Alters Its Name

COMPTON, CALIF. — Computer accessories maker Belkin Components underwent a facelift when the company announced a name change to Belkin Corp. The company no longer felt the word "Components" accurately described Belkin and its role in the computer industry, a company spokesman said.

Apple Cuts iMac Prices

CUPERTINO, CALIF. — Apple lowered the price on two iMac models by $100 and introduced a DVD-R SuperDrive equipped eMac.The new eMac will ship at the end of August with a $1,499 suggested retail price. In addition to the DVD-R/CD-RW drive the computer will feature an 800MHz PowerPC G4 processor, 256MB of RAM, 60GB hard drive and NVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics card. The eMac line was introduced earlier this year as Apple's attempt to regain share in the education and small business markets. The price cuts affected the combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW and CD-RW equipped iMacs. The units with the combo drive will now cost $1,499, while the CD-RW drive models are $1,299. These models are otherwise identically equipped with a G4 700MHz processor, 256MB of RAM and 40GB hard drives.

TDK Ships Tremor

GARDEN CITY, CALIF. — TDK began shipping the S-40 speaker system late last month. Originally introduced at CES in January, the S-40 is the entry-level model in TDK's Tremor speaker line. The three-speaker set includes two satellites and a subwoofer with a $49 suggested retail price.
