Samsung Q2 CE Sales Jump 10%

SEOUL, KOREA— Sales in the digital media segment at Samsung Electronics during the second quarter climbed to $2.1 billion, up about 10 percent from the $1.9 billion reported in the year-ago period. The company's digital media lineup includes digital televisions, DVD players and computers.
Net income for the digital media division reached $129.2 million in the second quarter. While Samsung did not release net figures for the second quarter of 2001, it said the segment had operating income of $25.8 million at that time.
The company's mobile phone information and telecommunications segment recorded sales of $2.4 billion in the second three months, down about 15 percent from the $2 billion reported in the same three months last year.
Net income in the mobile phone segment hit $526.1 million. While Samsung did not release net figures for the second quarter of 2001, it said the segment had $258.7 million in operating profit in the second three months of 2001.
Despite a sluggish marketplace, Samsung reported overall second quarter sales of $8.6 billion, up about 20 percent from the $6.9 billion recorded in the second quarter of last year.
Company pretax income hit $2.1 billion in the second quarter, up from the $819.1 million in the same three months in 2001. Overall operating income for the second quarter was $1.6 billion, compared with $517.3 million in the same three months last year.
While Samsung did not release company net income figures in the second quarter of 2001, it did report $1.7 billion in net income for the second quarter of 2002.
