AT&T Wireless Adds Location-Based Service

Staff -- TWICE, 7/22/2002

Redmond, Wash.— AT&T Wireless launched location-based service said to be the first of its kind in the United States. It's based on technology used to implement Phase 1 of the FCC's E-911 location mandate.

The Find Friends service, included as part of the mMode wireless-data package, lets a GSM/GPRS subscriber locate other AT&T subscribers, with their consent, if their phones are on. The subscriber can then call or send a text message to arrange a meeting.

The service also provides users with a list of nearby restaurants, bars, coffee shops and bookstores at which to meet. The service also provides directions. mMode starts at $2.99/month, plus airtime fees.

AT&T's two other location-based services include go2 and 10Best. The former, included in mMode's regular price lets users find nearby restaurants, movie theaters, ATMs and gas stations. And it provides driving directions to the destinations.

Previously, users had to enter their current location — either as a zip code or street address — to take advantage of either service. 10Best provides information on top restaurants, bars and hotels in cities across the country for $1.99/month.
