Cellular MP3 Downloads Due

San Jose, Calif. — RioPort plans in the fall to begin offering wireless carriers the technology to offer wireless MP3 downloads and streams to subscribers.
The music application service provider, which provides download technology to BestBuy.com and Radio Free Virgin, would give operators and handset makers the ability to choose encoding formats and digital rights management (DRM) technologies. In the past two years, RioPort said it has worked with Nokia, Samsung and Sprint PCS in developing the technology.
Full-length song downloads could be protected by usage rules that make a music file disappear after it has been played a certain number of times or after a certain period of time.
