Samsung Offers DVD Dad's Day Sale

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 4/1/2002

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J.— Samsung announced it has reached an "exclusive" arrangement with Warner Home Video to offer two free DVD movies with select Samsung DVD players as part of a special "Fathers' Day" DVD promotion.

The promotion, which will run from May 5 through June 15, 2002, will entitle anyone who buys a Samsung DVD player at a participating store free copies of Rodney Dangerfield's "Caddyshack" and Sylvester Stallone's "Driven" via a mail-in coupon.

"Caddyshack" is considered one of Warner Home Video's classic comedy titles. It features Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Ted Knight and Dangerfield, who collide on the golf course of an exclusive Country Club. "Driven" features Stallone as a retired racecar driver, who returns to teach a rookie what it means to win in a world where men are constantly out to prove themselves.

Samsung said participating stores will include Sears, Best Buy, Ultimate, J&R, Capital, Fry's, Good Guys and American TV.

During the offer, Samsung will push its new DVD line, including the recently available DVD-S321 ($179.99 suggested retail), which includes a 17-inch wide home theater chassis, headphone jack, jog shuttle control, component video output and palm-sized EZ Remote.

Also being promoted are the DVD-P421 ($199.99, April), which adds 480p progressive scan video output with 3/2 pull down, and the DVD-P721M ($249.99, April), which features 480p progressive scan video output and a built-in Memory Stick slot. The flash memory reader will allow users to playback digital music and photo files on TV screens. Pictures can also be loaded from photo-CD compatible discs.

At the top of the current models is the DVD-A921M ($299.99, June), which features progressive scan video output, a Memory Stick slot and DVD-Audio multichannel music playback from new DVD-Audio discs. Also included is compatibility with HDCD encoded CDs.
