Apple Ousted At Circuit City

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 2/25/2002

Richmond, Va. — Circuit City will expand its PC and laptop computer assortment in many of its stores to take advantage of the space created by the chain's decision earlier this month to drop Apple computer hardware and software.

A Circuit City spokesman described the split between the retailer and Apple as amicable and said the remaining iMacs, iBooks and software should be flushed through the system in about a month. Circuit City stores began selling Apple merchandise in July 2000.

Circuit City has not made a final decision on how to fill the 8 feet or so of shelf space now holding the Apple merchandise, but in the interim additional PC and notebook SKUs will take up the space. In time the shelf space may be dedicated to another product category.

The Circuit spokesman could not say what brands or types might be expanded, but he did say the chain did not have any immediate plans to add a private-label PC line like competitor Best Buy did last month.
