Instant Messaging On The Upswing

Staff -- TWICE, 2/25/2002

London— The Wireless Village initiative released the final version of a standard that promises interoperable mobile instant messaging and presence services (IMPS) among wireless phones, pagers, desktop and portable PCs, and other enabled devices.

Device manufacturers, application developers, wireless operators and portal operators will introduce commercial compliant products and services beginning this year, the initiative said. The initiative was sponsored by Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia and more than 100 other companies.

The services will be compatible with the installed base of wireless handsets supporting SMS messaging and WAP browsers. Users will be able to view presence information, share content, send multimedia instant messages, and join in community chats on their mobile terminals. Presence information helps users keep track of the online status and availability of a user's chat partners.
