Where The GPS Rollout Stands

New York — Here's an update on GPRS carriers' rollouts:
AT&T: Three dozen cities covering 45 percent of the population in its footprint are covered. "We'll be fully deployed in all markets by the end of the year as scheduled," a spokeswoman said.
Cingular: All of the carrier's GSM markets, except for California, are delivering GPRS. Those markets are Washington state, Nevada, the Carolinas, eastern Tennessee, and coastal Georgia. California goes online later this year. GPRS will be extended to the carrier's TDMA markets as it overlays GSM over its TDMA network. This year, the GSM/GPRS conversion will occur in Detroit, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Indianapolis and Puerto Rico. The rest of the carrier's TDMA footprint will follow in 2003 and early 2004.
VoiceStream: The company, which launched GPRS nationwide late last year, said its selection of GPRS-equipped phones will expand in the first quarter to include a PDA phone.
