Issa Target Of L.A. Bomb Plot

Staff -- TWICE, 12/17/2001

Los Angeles— Congressman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), former CEA chairman and founder of Directed Electronics, was a target of a plot by the Jewish Defense League (JDL) to bomb his office and the King Fahd mosque here.

Published reports say federal prosecutors accuse the chairman of the JDL, Irving David Rubin and co-defendant Earl Leslie Krugel with plotting to plant pipe bombs at the mosque. The mosque, which was funded by King Fahd and the Saudi Arabian royal family, was allegedly targeted as a "wake-up call" to the Muslim community.

Congressman Issa said in a prepared statement, "I have no way of knowing why I have become the focus and target of these individuals." Federal officials were quoted as saying that they could only speculate that Issa's ethnicity — his grandfather was Lebanese — may have made him a target.
