Wind-Up Cellphones Due

SCHAUMBURG, ILL.— Motorola plans a United States launch later this year of an accessory that powers up a wireless phone when consumers wind up a crank. Motorola has obtained rights worldwide to sell the device, which is based on Freeplay technology already used in radios and handheld lanterns. The device, which will be co-branded, is compatible with multiple Motorola phones and other popular brands. For every 45 minutes of hand cranking, the accessory will deliver 3-6 minutes of talk time or several hours of standby time, the company said. Pricing wasn't disclosed. The product will be Freeplay's first in the wireless market.

Free Hands-Free From AT&T

REDMOND, WASH.— AT&T Wireless became the first U.S. carrier to offer subscribers a free hands-free headset for use with their phones in a promotion that drives subscribers into AT&T-owned distribution channels. Since the beginning of the year, AT&T Wireless has been including ear pieces with new phones, but is now sending current subscribers coupons for free earpieces. The coupons are redeemable until Nov. 21 at any AT&T Wireless store or by calling (800) 310-4870.
