Philips Merges A/V Into Single Group

By Steve Smith -- TWICE, 9/3/2001

ATLANTA– Philips Consumer Electronics has integrated its Audio and Video Groups into one unit for the Philips brand and another for Magnavox.

Larry Blanford, president and CEO, said in a prepared statement, "By combing these two groups, we will be able to utilize innovative technologies like DVD, MP3 and CD-recording in even more applications to further expand our unique product offerings behind the Philips brand."

Michael Lang, former chief marketing officer and general manager of the Video Group, has been named general manager of the new Philips Audio/Video Group. Andy Mintz, who led the Audio Group, will become general manager of the Magnavox audio/video business, a new position.

In addition Blanford, a veteran of Maytag Appliances who also brought over John Riddle, retail sales VP, from the manufacturer, has hired another colleague from the majaps vendor.

Mark Buss, a 19-year Maytag executive, has joined Philips as chief marketing officer and will primarily be responsible for the Philips brand. Over the years Buss was strategic marketing VP, merchandising and customer development VP and VP/general manager of cooking products at Maytag. He was also responsible for updating Maytag's advertising icon, the "Lonely Repairman."

And as part of Philips' renewed emphasis on partnerships with buying groups (TWICE, August 20, p. 1), Mike Leese has been named general manager of buying group development. Previously Leese was marketing VP for projection TV.
