Sony Intros CD-RW Drives

SAN JOSE, CALIF. — Sony started shipping four new CD-RW drives, including one model that features a Memory Stick slot. The line up starts with an internal drive with a $179 suggested retail price that ships next month. It has 24x write, 10x rewrite and 40x read speeds. The step-up, $229 suggested retail price and shipping in November, adds a Memory Stick slot, and keeps the same features as the entry-level model. The first external model has USB connectivity and a $279 suggested retail price, while the flagship model uses an i.LINK (IEEE 1394) connector and has a $299 suggested retail price. Both external models ship in November.

Handspring Cuts Prices

NEW YORK — Handspring cut prices up to 25 percent on its Visor handheld computers. Under the new pricing structure the 2MB model is now $129, down $20, 8MB Visor Deluxe by $30 to $169, the 8MB Visor Platinum was slashed $50 to $199 and the Visor Edge is now $299, a $100 reduction. Handspring is positioning the price cuts as part of a back to school promotion.
