Audiovox Exec Slain In Miami Parking Lot

Staff -- TWICE, 9/3/2001

MIAMI, FLA.— James Duarte, 38, South America sales manager for Audiovox, was shot and killed in the parking lot of his office, here.

The murder took place on Aug. 13 at around 6 p.m., when Duarte was leaving his office. The Miami Herald quoted police reports indicating that Duarte was standing by his car when a heavyset man started shooting from inside a white Ford Taurus. As Duarte fled through the parking lot the car followed, his killer shooting at him from as close as 10 feet away.

The Herald quoted North Miami Police Chief Bill Berger as describing the murder as a probable "purposeful killing for vengeance." No arrests had been made at press time.

In a prepared statement, Audiovox senior VP Thomas C. Malone said, "James had been a member of the Audiovox family for seven years and in his position as South America sales manager, his dedication and commitment shone through everything he did. We always knew we could count on him and his loss will be felt throughout the company."

Duarte leaves behind his mother and a younger sister.
