Garmin To Upgrade Nav AppOLATHE, KAN. — Garmin plans in the coming weeks to add new features to its StreetPilot OnDemand navigation app for iPhones, including integration with Facebook, Foursquare and Wikipedia.
Also new for the subscription-based app will be a variety of voices or vehicle icons to choose from as well as improved 3D renderings of buildings.
By integrating Facebook and Foursquare, the app will display locations from these networks on the map and let users check in on arrival at their destination. Clicking on a Wikipedia icon on the map will reveal information about a location.
The app accesses Garmin’s Cloud-based navigation service at an annual subscription of $29.99.
Nielsen: Smartphone Base Up
NEW YORK — Forty-six percent of cellular users owned a smartphone in the fourth quarter of 2011, and 60 percent of those who said they got a new phone within the last three months chose a smartphone, a Nielsen survey showed.
Android continued to hold the lead among all smartphone users, with 46.3 percent of all smartphone owners surveyed reporting they have an Android phone, the survey also found.
