Seattle - RealNetworks announced today that Intel purchased 190 patents and an upcoming video codec for $120 million.

In addition, the two companies entered into a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on future develop of video codec software and related products.

According to Intel, the agreement gives it 190 patents, 170 patent applications worldwide, and RealNetworks next-generation video codec software. The patents center on foundational streaming media and, Intel said, will help the company offer better video experiences through Ultrabooks, smartphones and other digital media devices.

At International CES earlier this month Intel discussed its upcoming processors that will be used in smartphones, tablets and ultraportable laptops. According to the Wall Street Journal, seven RealNetworks employees will join Intel under the deal.
