Samsung Supersizes Screens On 4G LTE Smartphones

By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 1/10/2012

Las Vegas - Big screens are in fashion on two of three new Android 4G LTE smartphones made by Samsung for the AT&T network.

The Galaxy Note smartphone, based on the Android Gingerbread 2.3 phone OS, is promoted as the world's first smartphone with 5.3-inch display and described as a cross between a tablet and smartrphone. It comes with included S Pen that lets users make handwritten notes and drawings on documents, pictures and the like.

The other big-screen phone is the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD, a 9.27mm-thick phone with 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED (1280x720) screen.

The third new LTE phone is the Samsung Exhilarate, said to be the first 4G LTE smartphone built to meet multiple environmental and sustainability standards. It comes with 4-inch Super AMOLED display and a price of less than $50.

The Skyrocket HD and Exhilarate are due in the coming months. A timeframe for Note availability wasn't announced.

The Note, which features 1.4GHz dual-core processor, is promoted as the world's first smartphone with proprietary Super AMOLED Plus display, which delivers a wider range of colors and greater contrast than competing display technologies, the company said. Its screen delivers HD 1280x800 WXGA resolution with a 180-degree viewing angle.

The Note is touted as making it possible to view PowerPoint presentations, web pages, e-books and the like with minimal scrolling or zooming. The screen size also enables split-screen operation in the phone's native apps. Though the Note's screen is big, the company said the device nonetheless fits in a pocket because its thickness is only 9.65mm (0.38 inches).

The Note will be available in carbon blue and ceramic white.

The phone with the next-largest screen is the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD with 4.65-inch Super AMOLED 1280x720 screen. It features 1.5GHz dual-core processor.

The third Samsung phone, the Exhilarate, features 4-inch Super AMOLED display and is made from 80-percent recycled post-consumer materials. It also features eco modes and tools such as an Eco calendar and calculator.

Additional specifications were unavailable.
