Apple: iPhone 4S Preorders Break Record

By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 10/10/2011

New York - Apple went on the offensive against bloggers who expected more of the iPhone 4S, contending that preorders of the smartphone exceeded 1 million in a single day to surpass the previous single-day pre-order record of 600,000 held by the iPhone 4.

For its part, carrier AT&T called demand "extraordinary" and said it enjoyed more than 200,000 preorders of the iPhone 4S in the first 12 hours alone. The carrier called it "the most successful iPhone launch we've ever had."

Philip Schiller, Apple's senior VP of worldwide product marketing, went a step farther and said first-day pre-orders for iPhone 4S were "the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched..."

iPhone 4S will be available at Apple's 245 stores in the U.S. beginning at 8 a.m. local time on Friday, Oct. 14.

iPhone 4S comes in either black or white and will be available at a suggested retail of $199 for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB model, and $399 for the first 64GB iPhone.

iPhone 4S will also be available from the Apple Online Store, AT&T stores, Sprint stores, Verizon Wireless stores, and select Best Buy, Target and Walmart stores and select Apple authorized resellers.

For its part, Best Buy said it will carry all models of iPhones, including the Verizon, AT&T and Sprint versions of the iPhone 4S in its 1,104 Best Buy stores and the 247 Best Buy Mobile stores across the country beginning Oct. 14.

Consumers who buy an iPhone 4S at an Apple retail store get free personal setup service to help them customize their iPhone 4S and be up and running when they leave the store.

iPhone 4S features iOS 5 with more than 200 new features, and iCloud service, which automatically and wirelessly stores iPhone content in iCloud and pushes it to all devices, including PCs.
