Panasonic Adds Three Lumix Models

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 1/25/2011

Secaucus, N.J. - Panasonic Tuesday introduced three Lumix digital camera models offering advanced low-light capability, 3D capture, burst shooting and 1080 video recording in models DMC-TS3, DMC-ZS10 and DMC-FX78.

LumixPanasonic's David Briganti presents the Lumix DMC-TS3 all-weather camera with 3D capability.
The TS3, shipping in March at a price to be announced, is Panasonic's latest "Tough Series" camera designed for rough outdoor use. It is waterproof to a depth of 40 feet, shock-resistant to 6.6 feet, and dust- and freeze-resistant.

It will capture video in full HD 1080i, adds a built-in GPS function, compass, altimeter and barometer, and offers 12.1-megapixel high-speed CCD image sensor.

Other features include a new 3D Photo mode, which produces a 3D photo by taking 20 consecutive photos and overlays the two best to create a 3D image that can then be played on a Panasonic Viera 3D HDTV.

The format of 3D images is compatible with MPO, and can also be played back on other MPO-compatible televisions, digital photo frames and printers, the company said.

An image uploader is added for instant sharing via Facebook (for digital stills) or YouTube (for videos).

The lens on the TS3 has a 4.6x zoom range starting at a 28mm wide angle.

New Intelligent Resolution technology in the camera enables an Intelligent Zoom digital extension to a 6x equivalent.

The LCD monitor measures 2.7 inches and has 230,000 dots.

The Lumix FX78 (shipping in March at a price to be announced) includes an 3.5-inch Smart Touch LCD screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio, allowing for intuitive touch operation, including Touch AF, Touch Zoom, Touch Shutter and Touch Playback.

Also included is a Leica-certified 5x optical zoom (starting at 24mm and F2.5).

The camera also adds a Facebook and YouTube uploader, and includes a 12.1-megapixel high-speed CCD sensor.

Like the TS3, the FX78 will capture 1080i HD video in AVCHD format and includes Dolby Digital Creator for high quality audio recording.

The camera's advanced Venus Engine FHD video processing LSI incorporates Intelligent Resolution technology to sharpen fine details and reduce image noise.

The camera's Sonic Speed AF system is 33 percent faster than the FX75 predecessor and has a quick shutter release time of 0.005 seconds.

In camera editing includes Art Retouch and Beauty Retouch to change brightness and color saturation of images. The Beauty Retouch mode allows users to digitally touch-up faces by applying different effects, such as skin texture, lifting up the face and whitening of teeth.

The Lumix ZS10, meanwhile, includes a built-in GPS system, like the T3, Smart Touch LCD screen like the FX78 (only measuring 3 inches with 460,000 dots), and adds a Leica-certified 16x optical zoom lens (starting at 24mm).

Other features include 1080i video capture, Panasonic's new 3D Photo mode, Facebook and YouTube uploader, a new 14.1-megapixel MOS sensor and the advanced Venus Engine FHD image processing LSI.

Intelligent Resolution technology in the camera can bump up the zoom power to a 21x equivalent, while the Sonic Speed AF system is 49 percent faster than the prior ZS7, enabling 10fps burst shooting at a full 14 megapixels or 5fps with continuous AF.

Up to 60 fps bursting shooting is possible at 3.5-megapixel resolution using the camera's electronic shutter system.

The ZS10 will ship in March at a price to be announced later.
