Dallas - Samsung has begun offering the first of the long-promised Android 2.2 upgrades to its Galaxy class smartphones. The Android 2.2 upgrade is now available for T-Mobile's Galaxy class phone, the Vibrant, which was launched in July by the carrier.
As for availability of the 2.2 upgrade to owners of Galaxy-class phones activated on other carriers' networks, Samsung would only say, "We are continuing to work to make the Android 2.2/Froyo update available to all US Galaxy S owners as soon as possible."
The upgrade from Android 2.1(Éclair) to 2.2 (Froyo), which had been promised for the end of 2010, adds Wi-Fi calling, USB and Wi-Fi tethering to laptops, and various software enhancements, Samsung said.
The upgrade for the Vibrant is not downloadable over the air but must be downloaded first to a PC and then installed on the phone by connecting the phone to the PC, Samsung said.
T-Mobile's planned 4G version of Samsung's Galaxy class smartphone, due in the coming weeks, will launch with Android 2.2.
